Snakes are associated with some of the oldest rituals known to mankind, and are commonly understood to represent wisdom often forbidden to us, such as the knowledge of Good and Evil; as well as often being employed as a fertility symbol such as by the Hopi Indians of North America, where they would dance a reunion of the spirits of the Sky and the Underworld.
The snake is also representative of the divine umbilical chord, uniting humanity with Mother Earth. They are associated with many goddesses, acting as guardians of birth mysteries and regenerative power.
