In mythic artwork and literature, bat-winged chimera abound: Dragons, gargoyles, even Lucifer himself, and his legions of demons and incubi, are imagined framed in the arches of leathery, bat-like wings. To medieval minds, bats were seen as abominations, defying the conventional laws of nature which bound beasts to the earth: it was said that only the devil would grant vermin the power of flight. Bat wings became a symbol of dark miracles, freedom, witchcraft, and the nocturnal wanderings of dreams and nightmares. However, in the eyes of the magicians and alchemists, these winged chimera represented the wondrous imagination of nature.
These wings arch upwards like a glorious gateway, framing a single tear shaped gemstone.
