The wife of Baron Samedi, the Death Loa, Maman Brigitte is the queen of the Ghede, a family of crude, anarchistic ghost-like spirits who embody both Death and Fertility. Maman Brigitte is often seen as an wise-cracking elderly woman, who like the rest of the Ghede is fond of vulgarity and humor, and loves to indulge her vices.
She can also be a stern protector, guardian of the grave stones and cemeteries where she presides. Those who have been wronged can come to her seeking justice. Fire is sacred to her, as well as alcohol, hot peppers all things that burn. She is associated with her namesake, Saint Brigid.
The veve design is a name-sigil, used to call upon the “Loa,” the Voodoo equivalents of a Saint or an Angel; the spirit-ambassadors between god and mankind. The veve is traditionally drawn on the ground in cornmeal or gunpowder, adorned with the Loa's favorite offerings or sacrifices, as a centerpiece of a shrine or ceremony.
