"Then I drew on the white silk robe, embroidered with the Yellow Sign, and placed the crown upon my head. At last I was King, King in my right in Hastur, King because I knew the mystery of the Hyades, and my mind had sounded the depths of the Lake of Hali. I was King! The first gray pencilings of dawn would raise a tempest which would shake two hemispheres."

R.W. Chambers, The Repairer of Reputations

Mystery and romance author Robert W. Chambers wrote of the Yellow Sign throughout his short story collection. The King in Yellow describes it as a glyph capable of inspiring madness in those who see it. This is an early example of the motif of harmful sensation, also exemplified in the Necronomicon so often mentioned by contemporary horror writer, H.P. Lovecraft. Lovecraft was a great admirer of Chambers' works, and it is likely the Yellow Sign partly inspired Lovecraft to conceive of this dread tome.
