The Strophalos is an ancient symbol belonging to the cult of Greek Goddess Hecate, the guardian of the crossroads. In its design, we can see the labyrinth, a symbol of mystery and initiation, the serpent, a symbol of rebirth and healing magic, and the form of the labrys axe, an ancient symbol of the goddess and feminine powers.

Hecate was the original 'triple goddess,' and her three faces are reflected here as well. Darkness was her domain: The moon and its phases, the night and nocturnal creatures, and the powers of witchcraft. Yet she was seen as a protective goddess, often carrying a torch to guide travelers in the darkness, or a key to open the way for them. Shrines to Hecate were often placed near the thresholds of homes, and this symbol may have been placed there, or worn as a talisman of power and protection.
