"The Magic Circle of Solomon" is an essential piece of occult lore which may be familiar to most. This is a general term used to describe the protective seal that surrounds a magician as he preforms his most dangerous work... Often it is seen drawn on the floor, surrounding and shielding the magician, while the magical operation occurs within a separate circle. The name references King Solomon the Wise of the Old Testament, the ancient magician said to command an army of spirits through the use of Kabalistic talismans. There are countless magic circle designs, most featuring pentagrams or hexagrams enclosed within a circle, with decorated with names of spirits and protective words of power.
This rare and impressive design is one of my favorites. It features four hexagrams surrounding the tetragramaton, the Greek ALPHA and OMEGA, and a impressive cast of spirit names, all arranged within the coils of a serpent. These are the Hebrew names of the 'Deity Angels', or archangels, associated with each of the first nine Sephiroth ('Divine Emanations') and their corresponding Astrological spheres. Begining at the serpent's head, they read as follows:
✠ Ehyeh Kether Metatron Chaioth ha-Qadesh Rashith Ha-Galgalim S.M.M. (for “Sphere of the Primum Mobile”) ✠ Iah Chockmah Ratziel Auphanium Masloth S.S.F. (for “Sphere of the Fixed Stars”) ✠ Iehovah Elohim Binah Tzaphquiel Aralim Shabbathai S. (for “Sphere”) of Saturn ✠ El Chesed Tzadquiel Chaschmalim Tzedeq S. of Jupiter ✠ Elohim Gibor Geburah Kamael Seraphim Madim Sphere of Mars ✠ Iehovah Eloah Va-Daäth Tiphereth Raphaël Malakim Shemesh S. of the Sun ✠ Iehovah Tzabaoth Netzach Haniel Elohim Nogah S. of Venus. ✠ Elohim Tzabaoth Hod Michaël Beni Elohim Kokav S. of Mercury ✠ Shaddaï El Chai Iesod Gabriel Cherubim Leanah S. of the Moon ✠
